How to Register in Google Scholar: A Step-by-Step Guide
Google Scholar is a user-friendly platform for finding academic articles, books, dissertations, and other scholarly materials. Additionally, it allows you to create a personal researcher profile where you can track citations, manage your publications, and showcase your achievements. This guide explains how to set up your Google Scholar profile.
What You Need Before You Start
Prepare the following before registering:
- Google Account. If you don’t have one, sign up for a Google account first.
- Details of your publications. This could include articles, theses, books, or other academic works.
- A profile picture. Choose a professional photo.
Step 1: Sign In to Google Scholar
- Visit Google Scholar.
- Click on “Sign In” in the upper-right corner of the page.
- Log in to your Google account. If you don’t have one, click “Create account” and fill out the registration form.
Step 2: Create Your Profile
- Once logged in, click on “My Profile” at the top of the page.

- Name. Enter your full name as it appears in your academic publications.
- Affiliation. Specify your institution, such as a university or research organization.
- Email Address. Use your institutional email (e.g., @university.edu) if possible.
- Research Interests. Enter keywords describing your research topics (e.g., “bioengineering,” “sustainable development”).
- Homepage link. Add a link to your personal website or your page on your institution’s website if available.

Step 3: Add Your Publications
Google Scholar will automatically suggest a list of publications associated with your name.
- Review the suggested list.
- Select your publications and click “Add.”
- If any of your works are missing:
- Click “Add article manually.”
- Fill out the required fields:
- Title of the publication.
- Authors.
- Journal or source.
- Year of publication.
- DOI or link (optional).
Tip: If you have many publications not automatically identified, add them gradually to avoid errors.
Step 4: Configure Automatic Updates and Make Your Profile Public
Google Scholar can automatically add new publications to your profile.
- Enable this feature if you want your profile to stay up-to-date.
- Alternatively, choose manual updates to approve each addition yourself.
To make your profile visible to others:
- Open your profile settings.
- Enable the “Make my profile public” option.
